Without a first team game again this week, Hayes put out a strong reserve game for the second time in a fortnight against Waltham Forest, this time in the Suburban League Cup. The opposition themselves also fielded a number of first teamers who were coming back from injuries etc so this looked like it might be more of a contest than the previous one.
The game took a while to get going with just a second
minute 20 yarder from Damon Ming that was well held by keeper Wesley Jackman to show for the first twenty minutes effort.
Nick Muir saw a free-kick come straight back off the wall for Forest the return from which was easily handled by Keita Karamoko in the Hayes goal before the Missioners began to dominate proceedings. Ming fired in a corner that Ryan Tackley glanced only for a defender to touch it wide of the target before the left-back went even closer when he met a Daniel Dyer corner only to see his header beat Jackman before coming back off the crossbar with Liam Sango clearing.
Less than sixty seconds later the deadlock was broken thanks to a rare Ming header, Josh Scott and Dyer combined before the midfielder planted a perfect cross that Ming leapt to head home from close range. The second wasn't long coming either, Ming found Scott who in turn played the ball into the path of Stafforde Palmer who coolly lifted it over Jackman's dive and into the net.
The visitors will feel a little hard done by when shortly after going two behind they had a very good penalty claim rejected by referee Mr Georgiou when Karamoko mistimed his just and flattened Ashley Danials only for the official to play on which led to a Waltham Forest free-kick. The kick was planted to the far post where Nathan Smith had lost his marker only to volley across the goal and wide when it looked easier to hit the target.
Right on the stroke of half time Palmer came close to ending the game as a contest when he received the ball from Ming, turned and fired goalwards from 25 yards only to see his drive crash back off the crossbar before Sango cleared the danger.
The visitors came out fired up in the second period and almost got a reward with less than a minute played, Marlon Boateng played the ball from the left to Muir with his snap shot forcing a full stretch tip over from Karamoko.
However, play soon moved back to the other end, a deep Ming corner being met by Scott but his shot was blocked on the post by Jackalu Massala for another corner, this kick was taken by Dyer and again Tackley rose to meet the kick but this time was wide of the target.
It was not until
the 69th minute that either keeper was troubled further, substitute Miles Jones won the ball on the right side before racing into the box and crossing to an arriving Scott who netted with ease at the far post.
From this point the score could have gone up and up but for the bumps on the pitch, Scott put Ming through but a bobble allowed Jackman to gather and twice within a minute Scott himself saw bobbles force him to fire wide with just Jackman to beat. Despite this, the fourth wasn't long coming, a long ball from defence saw Scott outpace the last man and as the poorly positioned Jackman continued to back off Josh just rolled the ball into the centre of the net with ease.
Substitute Junior Thompson had seen an earlier effort saved by Jackman before a last minute Ming pass found the striker who turned his marker before placing the ball wide of the keeper to seal a 5-0 victory for CD's side.
