AFC Wimbledon 1 Hayes 2
Half-Time: 1-0 Referee: Mr J McGann Attendance: tba
Colin Davis and his young reserve side finally got their hands on a trophy on Friday evening as they finished off the season by claiming victory in the final of the Suburban Challenge Shield for the first time in the Clubs history. This was just deserts for a side that have done the club proud this season having also been runners-up in the Suburban Premier and Suburban League Cup.

The game opened in quite cagey fashion with AFC Wimbledon aiming to avenge the 5-0 scoreline when we knocked them out of the League Cup at Kingsmeadow. The first action came on six minutes when a 20 yard Rhys Price free-kick sailed narrowly over Paul Smith's crossbar.

The game in fact really failed to get going after this early chance as torrential rain started falling, just what you would expect in mid May!! Thankfully the playing surface at Walton Casuals was a credit to that club, with probably more grass on it than ours had the previous August, and the rain did not prevent good football being played by both sides.

The deadlock was finally broken on the half hour mark courtesy of a fine sweeping move by the Surrey side. Anthony Giglio advanced from midfield with the ball before playing it to the feet of striker Robin Shroot who instantly fed it wide right to Matt Fish who cut inside and fired goalwards with the ball settling in the net courtesy of a defensive deflection that meant John Peacock could not keep it out.

As half time approached Rhys Price was twice involved in moves that gave rise to a potential equaliser. Firstly he saw a drive from 30 yards take a deflection that saw the ball bounce over Smith but sadly over the crossbar also, he then fed a free-kick to former AFC man Dwain Williams who drove through the defensive wall but was denied by a save and last ditch grab by Smith.

The Missioners started in lively fashion after the break and with just a couple of minutes played Price was a whisker away from drawing us level but his volley went the wrong side of the upright. It did however only take ten minutes to level the game and what a goal it was. A long punt by Peacock was superbly controlled on the chest of Stafforde Palmer who then, with his back to goal, planted a 30 yard volley over Smith who was slightly off his line and into the back of the Wimbledon net.

AFC then started to push forwards on the slippery surface and Peacock had to be very alert to race from goal and slide the ball away from an advancing Chris Hussey who had been put through by Luke Pigden. With just over fifteen minutes remaining we were almost behind again, James Danamer found space on the left before firing a cross through the six yard box that Fish only just failed to connect with as he slid in at the far post.

This shocked us into action and within 60 seconds the ball was nestling in the back of the Wimbledon net. Williams gained possession in the middle of the park and with an inch perfect pass sent youth team winger Toby Little away. He outpaced defender Stevie Gilbert before placing a perfect shot across Smith and into the far corner of the net.

Seven minutes remained when top scorer Adam Cornell was inches away from killing the tie as his header from Williams corner flashed the wrong side of the post. The final chance was to fall to the Surrey side just as the game entered stoppage time with an equaliser being denied by a fine piece of keeping by John Peacock. Anthony Giglio made inroads on the right hand side and picked out Robin Shroot in the centre his shot appeared to send Peacock the wrong way but the Hayes stopper stretched out a strong arm to keep the ball out and it was cleared for a corner. the kick itself flew across the face of goal and away to safety.
