Hayes went into this top of the table clash against League leaders Sutton United without striker Stafforde Palmer who was on first team duty at Braintree, however it took just ten minutes for the Missioners to open the scoring with Adam Cornell finishing from a Junior Thompson pass after riding three tackles.
It was Hayes again in the 33rd minute when a defensive misunderstanding left Thompson clear to pick up a loose ball in the Sutton area to calmly slot into an open goal.
In the final minute of the first half a wild tackle in the area handed our visitors a penalty and a potential way back into the game. The kick was taken by "goal a game" Jason Henry but fortunately his effort was well wide of the post and the two goal advantage remained at the break.
The second half also started well for Hayes with Adam Cornell shooting over the bar and then just wide of the post before the young top scorer netted the third in the 70th minute, beating two defensive tackles before firing into the roof of the net.
Sutton's Alan Bray pulled one back for the visitors eight minutes later with a header into the top corner beating Adam Thomson but in the closing seconds of this exciting match a shot from Cornell was fumbled by Joe McLoughlin in the Sutton goal which fell nicely to Thompson who also added his second.
This was a game of good passing and flowing football from both sides which was complemented by all three officials in allowing the game to progress without undue use of flags and whistles.
A solid performance all round with Damon Ming standing out with his ball control and vision.
